The Captain's Labradors
Giving Exceptional Dogs an Exceptional Family Life
At The Captain's Labradors, we believe dogs thrive when they are first and foremost cherished members of a family. Our Guardian Family Program allows select dogs to live in loving homes while remaining part of our carefully planned breeding program for a limited period of time.
The goal is simple: exceptional dogs living exceptional lives with exceptional families.
A Guardian Family is a family that welcomes one of our carefully selected dogs into their home and becomes a partner in our breeding program.
The dog lives with the Guardian Family as a beloved companion, participating in daily family life, training, activities, vacations, adventures, and all the moments that make a dog part of the family.
The Captain's Labradors retains specific breeding rights for a defined period. Once those obligations are complete, full ownership transfers to the Guardian Family.
We believe our dogs deserve family life.
Rather than living in a kennel setting, Guardian dogs enjoy the companionship, attention, socialization, and experiences that come with being part of a household.
The program also allows qualified families to enjoy a carefully selected Labrador without the purchase price typically associated with a breeding or show-quality dog.
Most importantly, it creates a partnership built around doing what is best for the dog.
A successful Guardian Family relationship requires trust, communication, and teamwork.
Together, we work to ensure every decision is made with the dog's long-term well-being in mind.
Not every dog will become part of a breeding program.
Health clearances, temperament, maturity, structure, and overall suitability are evaluated before breeding decisions are made.
The Captain's Labradors reserves the right to retire or release a dog from the Guardian Family Program if breeding is no longer in the dog's best interest.
The dog's quality of life always comes before breeding plans.
For females who meet health and breeding requirements, participation typically includes two -three litters.
Breeding decisions are made carefully and intentionally, with consideration given to the health, temperament, and overall welfare of the female.
When breeding occurs, The Captain's Labradors coordinates breeding, whelping, and puppy placement responsibilities. Throughout the process, communication with the Guardian Family remains a priority.
For males who meet health and breeding requirements, breeding opportunities may occur periodically throughout the program.
Guardian Families continue to enjoy daily life with their dog while The Captain's Labradors coordinates approved breeding activities as needed.
Every breeding decision is made thoughtfully and with the best interests of the dog and breed in mind.
We encourage Guardian Families to enjoy life with their dog.
Whether your interests include:
We support activities that strengthen the relationship between dog and family.
Titles and accomplishments are wonderful, but they are never more important than the dog's health, happiness, and quality of life.
Life happens.
If a Guardian Family experiences a significant life change and can no longer keep the dog, The Captain's Labradors asks to be contacted first.
Our shared goal is always to protect the dog's future and ensure a safe, loving outcome.
No Guardian Family should ever feel they must face a difficult situation alone.
Every Guardian Family placement has a clear endpoint.
When the dog's participation in the breeding program is complete and all program obligations have been fulfilled, full ownership transfers to the Guardian Family.
By that time, the dog is already exactly where it belongs, with the family that has loved, cared for, and invested in it from the beginning.
The best Guardian Families:
Previous Labrador experience is appreciated but not required.
What matters most is a genuine love of dogs and a willingness to build a successful partnership.
Guardian opportunities are limited and not always available.
Families interested in the program are encouraged to complete a Guardian Family Application and start a conversation with us about current and future opportunities.
We are always happy to answer questions and help determine whether the Guardian Family Program may be the right fit.
